When speaking about Christmas Stockings they can basically be broken down into four parts; the History of the Stocking, What to fill the Christmas-StockingStuffers with, where the stockings hang and What the stocking looks like.
History There are many different theories about the History of Christmas Stockings and traditions on hanging the Christmas Stocking. Although attempts to help with ideas for filling the stocking appear in nearly every catalog containing Christmas related articles, few know if there is a tradition that started the type of “filling” for the Christmas-StockingStuffers.
An Old World tradition brought over from Germany that talked about filling the stocking with things that satisfied the five sences.; TASTE, SMELL, SOUND, FEEL AND SIGHT. Using these 5 elements stuffing a stocking is easy.
TASTE AND SOUNDA large orange or apple is place in the toe of the stocking. Sound was a babies rattle or noisy toy, this can also be unshelled nuts or coins.
SIGHTJewelry was traditionally used but for children that could be the foiled colored candies or the specialty candies.
FEELTraditionally this was silk, today it could be a t-shirt, lingerie, tie, pajamas.
