Halloween-Styrofoam-HeadstoneII

Headstones are the mainstay in Halloween graveyard scenes. HALLOWEEN-STYROFOAM-HEADSTONEII are sold in most Halloween decoration stores at great expense but can be made for pennies on the dollar.

One large piece of Styrofoam 2 inch thick will yield at least 4 large headstones or many, many small headstones. The YouTube video at the bottom of this page is the best one I have seen for creating simple easy Headstones for your Halloween graveyard.

This is a picture of the items I picked up to make Headstones. The pieces on the extreme right are being added to as an edging on a flat piece. The two large pieces standing in the back are being cut in half to make two headstones, one per long piece

Once they are cut in half, add toothpicks to the long side on one piece and glue to the other side. I use Elmers wood glue or Gorilla Glue. Slide the two pieces together. Add tape across the seam to hold together tightly while drying

These are the two Halloween-Styrofoam-headstoneII. One headstone will have a cross on the top the other a triangular roof. I will find some gargoyle, bat, plastic angel to fit into that middle diamond (hole).

Take a 2" piece of Styrofoam and draw the cross on it. I made a bottom piece the width of the inside of the headstone to enable me to attache to the inside.

Add toothpicks in the location of the cross, add glue and then press the cross down on the picks and tape together.

Allow to dry 24 hours.

Before adding the back piece, cut two pieces of 1" PVC pipe the length of the headstone. Secure in place with toothpicks and add expandable spray Styrofoam to secure to inside of Headstone.

The pipes will accommodate your yard stakes. Re bar will be driven into the ground making sure that at least 2/3 of the re bar goes up the headstone and at least 12 inches into the ground for a stable stone.

Then I added a thinner piece across the back, glue and taped in place. This extra piece put the cross at the same level as the rest of the back. Add the paint and you're done.

To finish off your grave yard scene add spiders these can be on Spider webs or just hanging over the edge of one of your tombstones. Add ground breakers like skeletons, a general assortment of body parts or various skulls.

I bought the animated Rising From the Grave Reaper> a couple of years ago and it was a great addition to my cemetery.
